Photo workshop / expedition

SPRINGTIME MORAVIAN TUSCANY

A photo expedition is much more than just a photography training. It is an experience that will stay with you for many months, years, or even a lifetime, and for the enthusiastic photographer it is the perfect holiday:-). I will take you to the most photogenic places in Moravian Tuscany and guide you to improve your favorite hobby (or passion). You will gain knowledge of photographic theory that you can immediately put into practice and understand the context that you may have missed before.

Helping us to do so will be the beautifully undulating landscape of the so-called Moravian Tuscany, where the most beautiful photos are taken especially in spring, with the lush green shades of the local fields and the delicate beauty of the blossoming trees.

WHY TO ATTEND MY PHOTO WORKSHOP / PHOTO EXPEDITION?
EXPERIENCE
The primary focus is on photography and everything related to it. However, I consider photo workshops and expeditions to be a great experience and a perfect holiday, when we do and develop what we enjoy, clear our heads from worries and responsibilities, roam in beautiful landscapes and explore places near and far.
KNOWLEDGE
We will immerse ourselves in the secrets of photographic theory and especially practice. Whether we're working with camera settings, composition or dealing with weather conditions, I'll guide you to get the most out of the place and moment and create better photographs than before.
SMALL GROUP
The maximum group size is typically 6 people. This allows me to give each person enough individual attention to the extent possible, and we can fit in relatively small photogenic locations.
PARTY OF ENTHUSIASTS
The workshops are attended by men and women of virtually all ages. Some people take photos purely for pleasure and relaxation, others want to present their work more and push it further. But there is always a nice group of people who are in the same boat and share a similar interest. Sometimes the participants take away not only photos and knowledge, but also new friendships.
WONDERFUL PLACES
I'll take you to the most impressive ( yet sometimes relatively discreet) photographic locations, which we'll visit at the time when I know the light is at its best and their beauty is most apparent. I also complement the photogenic locations with other interesting places here and there, be it historical monuments and more of a tourist attraction, or perhaps a visit to a local winemaker:-).
EXPERIENCED LECTURER
I have been involved in photography for almost 20 years, 5 of which I spent as a camera product specialist. I have a rich knowledge of theory and particularly practical experience, which I have been happily passing on to participants of my workshops for more than 10 years.

Who is the photo workshop / expedition for?

►  DSLR or mirrorless camera owners of all brands

►  Beginners as well as advanced – even a fresh beginner shouldn’t have trouble to keep up, but at the same time we will go deeper into the work with the camera and composition

►  Anyone who enjoys landscape photography and wants to improve their skills

►  All those who have a fond relationship with nature and want to capture it in the best possible way with photography

►  Anyone who wants to better understand their photo equipment and be confident in handling it

►  Anyone who wants to learn how to better perceive the landscape with all its details and find a composition that stands out in a photo

What do I do this for?

Photographing landscapes and being in them is always an intense experience that recharges and replenishes me and allows me to live the moment. When I manage to transfer all the impressions into a photo in a way that others can perceive them too, the joy is doubled. I want to pass on my knowledge and experience to you, so that you too can have intense experiences from photographing and being in the landscape and be able to transfer them into your photographs that would excite and touch the heart of you and everyone who sees them.

What is the course of the photo workshop / expedition?

The essential focus of the photo expedition is the travelling abroad itself and exploring new, distant places and landscapes that are simply not to be found in your homeland. We will therefore spend our time mainly outdoors exploring and discovering interesting photographic, but sometimes also purely touristic locations. Of course, you will not miss out on photographic theory and there will be plenty of time for discussions, consultations and passing on my tips and tweaks.

DIFFICULTY
Low

Moravian Tuscany is really very comfortable in terms of difficulty, as we generally tend to cross by car and only move within short distances (tens to hundreds of metres) in gentle terrain. The photo workshop is therefore accessible to virtually any age/fitness category.

Overall, I try to tune the workshops to a more relaxed level and combine eventual more physically demanding sections with places that can be reached by car, etc. However, it is definitely necessary to be fundamentally able to walk, i.e. not to have any direct medical limitations that would restrict your movement. I also allocate some time during the day for rest and regeneration. Workshops are often attended by people of (pre-)retirement age, to which I adapt the difficulty to the extent possible.

THE COSTS
THE PRICE INCLUDES
  • Guidance and tuituion of the tutor
  • 3 e-learning books
  • Thorough specification of the workshop itinerary, required / recommended items and things to check

Don’t worry – despite the accomodation and transport are not officially included in the price, you won’t be left alone and I shall be there for you before and during the workshop, so you wouldn’t have to deal with these things on your own (see the next column).

NOT INCLUDED IN THE PRICE
  • Flying tickets
  • Accomodation *
  • Local transportation *
  • Insurance of any kind
  • Anything not specifically included in the price

* Being an individual and not a travel agency, I can’t officially offer and include such services in the price of the workshop. However, I will go there in a van / micro bus with seats reserved for all the participants and you can go with me beyond the scope of the workshop with no charge.

Also you can check the box saying that you wish to book a room for yourself in the registration form and I would do it for you.

Estimated costs should therefore be:

Photo workshop: 1.390 € / $
Accomodation: 3 * 95 = 285 € / $ (per person / night with breakfast)

+ flying tickets
+ lunches, dinners snacks and beverages
+ anything else not mentioned here (insurances, visas etc.)

Which means 1.675 € / $ for the photo workshop and the accommodation altogether + other costs depending on the prices of your flying tickets, local spending etc.

Award-winning tutor - Marek Ondracek

I’ ve been photographing landscapes for more than 10 years. My photography led me to Olympus (now OM System), where I worked as a product specialist until 2020 and I am still an ambassador and external trainer of the brand. However, I am able to help set up cameras of any brand and owners of any DSLR or mirrorless camera are welcome to attend the workshop. So I have many years of experience both with photography itself and with tutoring and communicating with people. Passing on knowledge and experience to others, regardless of their current level of experience in photography, is very fulfilling for me and I am always pleased when participants leave the workshop enriched, which is my goal. For more info, see the “About Me” section:-).

Often my friend and fellow photographer Milan Strachota also accompanies me on my workshops and  attends to the participants with me at the locations and enriches my presentation with his insights.

I would like to thank you very much for the opportunity to experience the WS weekend. Perfectly prepared, precise organization and personal approach in explaining the subject. I was very impressed.

Jiri C.

So to the course – simply great!
I appreciate the friendly atmosphere, your relaxed and calm approach, yet professional. It was great that you were not alone, but Milan was with you as well. The good thing was that when I was taking photos, or anyone really, and maybe then groping for what to do next, suddenly you or Milan would appear and give advice or show how you would shoot. And that’s the most valuable thing for me, to see how a pro does it, how he thinks about it, what he notices, etc. It also changed my perspective on wide angle lenses, how to work better with foreground and not be afraid to even tilt the wide angle lens and use the “converging lines”.

Michaela H.

You’ve got it all figured out and you’ve given us 100%. I also liked how you showed how and from where exactly we should take pictures, because we would not have seen it ourselves. All in all I liked it, you are a good lecturer, you know a lot of things and you know how to pass them on in a human way. I’m glad I went with you 🙂

Michal J.

I would like to thank you for a well-run workshop, where practical and theoretical knowledge were combined and complemented each other in an interesting way. Since I know the Central Bohemian Uplands, I was not surprised by the places suitable for photography, but what was important for me was how to look at them in a new way, what to look for in the landscape and how to make a composition that makes sense and is interesting. Last but not least, the technical side of photography and camera operation was very well covered. I must also not forget the very friendly atmosphere, which added to the impression.

Olda Č.

We have found that one such workshop is many times better than a video watched hundreds of times on You Tube. We appreciate your approach, which was as individual as possible.

Inna K.

I liked the workshop, I definitely took away some new knowledge. I appreciate your individual approach to the participants and your effort to enrich everyone somehow, to help them improve their skills, which is not common in all workshops. I was glad to meet new, previously unknown places and new people.

Janis K.

It was very beneficial. It was very interesting for me, especially that I could hear everything in a coherent way, and also that some of the scenes that are difficult for me to realize are obvious to you. It makes you feel like you can actually do it.

Jana P.

Thanks a lot for WS in the Central Bohemian Uplands. I have the best feelings about it, even though the light was not so good. Lots of good advice from you, great lectures. It was a good bunch of people, it’s nice to meet other people crazy about photography :).

Viola P.

Thank you for the course in a beautiful environment. I appreciate the professional and patient approach to all of us with regard to our previous experience. I definitely benefited from the course, I discovered more features of my camera that I hadn’t used before. Hearing the experiences of the other course participants was also helpful to me.

Ivan M.

Your workshops are always inspiring for me and I take a lot away from them! Not to mention the new skills, but also the locations that would probably be harder for me to get to on my own 🙂

Milan M.

I have to say that every workshop so far has given me a lot of energy and on the drive home I always thought I had been gone for about a week before I realized it was basically “a few” hours. The atmosphere is amazing and the participants and you as lecturers are great:-).

Zlatka G.

I would like to thank you very much for your approach and your efforts to give us as much theoretical knowledge as possible, but especially practical experience. I got to know a beautiful location that I had previously only admired on the internet, nice people and most importantly I feel that it has pushed me further in landscape photography :).

Vaclava B.

I have to say that it was a very pleasant time for me. I definitely learned a lot of useful information, including about light and properly lit objects and using mobile apps for tracking the movement of the sun. So bottom line, I have a very pleasant feeling about the meeting together, I feel very happy to have met you in person and know who is behind the great photos and also have more motivation to improve.

Educational e-books!

The price of the photo workshop also includes educational materials in the form of e-books, which the participants will receive in advance so that they can study the theory in advance if they wish. Of course, we will also be covering everything in the field as well as in the form of discussions and consultations.

There are 3 e-books in total and they cover, like the workshop itself, the following areas:

PHOTOGRAPHY TECHNICS
  • Basic camera settings for landscape photography
  • Advanced work with depth of field
  • Working with long exposures
  • Exposure (and eventually focus) bracketing
  • Correct focusing
  • Special features and tweaks
  • And more
COMPOSITION
  • Best practices on how to compose objects in photography
  • Creating immersive, plastic landscape photographs
  • Working with the overall aesthetic of a photograph
  • Directing attention
  • Creating “clean” photographs without distracting elements
  • And more
ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS
  • Influence of the position of the sun on the photo
  • Appropriate timing of photographing
  • Advanced weather forecasts
  • Fog – the photographer’s best friend (and occasional villain)
  • Shooting in “bad” weather
  • And more

SNAPSHOTS FROM THE PAST WORKSHOPS

LOCATIONS WE WILL VISIT

You can look forward to the most (photographically) interesting locations, which you can see in the attached photos. It always depends on the current weather conditions what specific places we visit. The main locations include:

  • Rolling hills near Karlin
  • St. Barbara chapel in the fields
  • Rolling hills near Svatoborice
  • Bio corridors with cherry trees
  • Cherry tree in vinyards in Cejkovice
  • Historical city of Mikulov
  • And many more unspecifiable locations:-)

Should we experience rainy weather, there are plenty of interesting places in the surroundings for shooting in bad weather (especially forests) or for a tourist visit (historical city of Mikulov, chateau Lednice and many more).

ACCOMODATION

The base of the workshop is Hotel Lotrinsky. It is a very comfortable modern hotel with delicious meals and rich breakfasts:-). There are rooms pre-booked in the hotel for all participants, so it is possible to request to transfer the reservation to your name in the registration form, or everyone can arrange their accommodation separately. Everyone would have their own room, where the price per person per night with breakfast is ca. 95 € / $.

GETTING THERE

Transportation to and within the workshop is officially individual and is not included in the scope and price of the workshop as mentioned in the “Costs” section. However, I will go there in a van / micro bus with seats reserved for all the participants. Each participant would just have to individually go either to the hotel where the workshop is based (for example if you go by your car from the neighbouring country), or to the nearest airport (e.g. Prague or Brno in Czech Republic, Lubljana in Slovenia etc.), where I would pick you up. All the transportation within the workshop with me will be for free!

So you will be taken care of and you don’t have to worry about how would you manage to go there:-). Everything will be specified more precisely ca. 1 month prior the the photo workshop / expedition.

PHOTO WORKSHOP - AN IDEAL GIFT

Do you also deal every year with what Christmas or birthday present to give your loved ones? There are a lot of things around us, and generally speaking, we already have the things we really need, or we obtain them ourselves. In the spirit of the motto “The best things in the world are not things”, experiences are thus rising in popularity as ideal gifts. What could be better, then, than a gift that allows one to immerse oneself in one’s profession or favourite hobby and improve in it? That’s why I’m taking this approach and offering a gift voucher for my workshops.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED
NECCESSARY
  • DSLR or mirrorless camera
  • Lenses
  • Tripod
  • At least 1 spare battery
USEFUL
  • Polarization filter
  • ND filter (ideally at least 64x and especially strong 1000x or more)
  • Extra spare batteries 🙂
OPTIONAL
  • Laptop for backup or quick photo editing
  • Spare SD cards (just in case)
  • Spare camera (just in case)
CLOTHING
  • Water resistant mountaineering boots (ideally, possibly also some outdoor shoes)
Water resistant outdoor clothing (or at least a raincoat)

I will specify all necessary or suitable equipment in more detail in the organizational emails to the participants.

OM SYSTEM cameras and lenses for borrowing

I can also lend selected Olympus / OM System cameras and lenses to participants for the duration of the workshop so they can try them out in practice. Ideal for anyone who is deciding on a purchase, or would purely like to try out this photo equipment elsewhere than just in a shop.
